Lower Bear Trail is a hidden gem in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The trail is definitely worth checking out next time you are in town. Read on to find out more. And forgive me for the terrible angle on the photo above. Good grief; I should know better!
Reasons to Try Lower Bear Trail
First, the trail is close to town. Within about 20 minutes, you can get to the trail head. Plus, the road is well maintained and easily traversable with a car. Second, Lower Bear Trail is a multi-use trail. If you like mountain biking or hiking, this is a great trail for either. Third, the scenery is spectacular. This photo on the right is the view towards Steamboat Springs, CO. Finally, Lower Bear Trail provides a variety of uphills, flat, and down hills. I would consider it on the easier end of moderate in intensity.
Traveler Beware
One of the good things about the Lower Bear Trail is that within about a mile, you feel like you have an immense area all to yourself. Of course, solitude often comes at a price. This trail is no exception. The trail stars with a relatively steep, exposed climb up the side of a slope. Just beware that this could be very unpleasant in 85-90 degree heat mid-day in the middle of the summer. I hiked it in the fall, and the temperature and weather were spectacular.
