Sand Mountain is located in the Elkhead Mountains. The mountain is actually two separate peaks. They reach heights of around 10800'. It is a great hike if you want to have a mountain almost all to yourself. However, it takes a little navigating to get there. The trailhead is located off a forest service road near Clark, Colorado. If you do not have a vehicle that can traverse rough forest service roads, then the hike is quite long. We were able to travel to the base of Sand Mountain, but it is quite slow. We probably could have walked it almost as fast.
There is Sand Mountain North and South. A trail provides access to the south peak. There is not trail to the north peak, but it is accessible. We hiked to the south peak, then traversed over to the north peak. This requires about 30 minutes of traveling down a steep scree field. The rocks are shoe box to cooler sized. If you have ever walked on a boulder field, they all have different sized rocks. Most of them on this field were stable, however it required patience to navigate safely. Once over the scree field, there is a steep hike up to the north peak. The entire loop is about 6 or so miles. My tracker is not accurate when I climb up hill. As a result, I’m guessing a little on the distance.
The 360-degree views from both peaks are spectacular. The south peak is flat, and there are ample places to have a snack or sit and enjoy the scenery. The north peak is rockier, but there are still places to sit and enjoy. I guess the sand mountains get their names from the windswept, sandy areas on their sides. Anyway, there are excellent views of Steamboat Lake, Hahns Peak, the Zirkel Wilderness, and so much more. Find out more from Summit Post.
