Contrived Signs of Spring

In the US, we use the calendar to designate when spring starts. March 20 is officially the first day of spring!

Another indicator that spring is coming is the time change. Daylight savings time started on March 14, 2021 at 2am.

There is a long history of daylight savings time.

Even if the weather does not feel like spring, we have calendar and time indicators that are signs of spring.

Natural Signs of Spring

Ramps & Bluebells

Ramps and bluebells are two of the first plants to pop up in the woods. They are always a strong sign of spring. I love seeing them reappear every year. Ramps are great to eat! Bluebells just make me happy. Bluebell blooms cover the forest floor with a blue and purple carpet.

Insects

Insects become more active in the spring. Spiders start to build webs in trees and across the hiking trails. I'll have to get out my spider web stick again. There is nothing worse than a spider web across the face.

Frogs, Eggs, & Tadpoles

Frogs are one of the first sounds that are a sure sign of spring. Wet areas have been alive with the chirping of frogs. Puddles and wetlands are full of frog eggs. These eggs eventually turn into tadpoles and then into frogs. Nature is so amazing.
